THREE FALL IN BATTLE WITH CONVICTS POSSE RUMS UNEXPECTEDLY ON THE FUGITIVES IN THE BRUSH AMD FIRING AT CMCE BEGINS SPECIAL MESSENGERS SPEED TO PLACERVILLE FOR REINFORCEMENTS AND MEDICAL AID Aug. I.—A dcape rate battle between the fugitive convicts and the posse under Sheriff Bosquit, backed by a force of militia, took place shortly before dusk near the Grand Victory mine. Latent reports state that two of the attacking psrty were shot down in their tracks at the first fire. Richard Dill, one of (he militiamen, is reported to be fatally wounded. The convicts, two of whom wounded, are now hiding in the brush. Posses from all the surrounding country are hurrying to the scene to surround the convicts, and it is the purpose to burn the brush to drive them from cover.
