AMERICAN WARSHIPS ARE RUSHED TO TURKEY REPORTED ASSASSINATION OF UNITED STATES VICE CONSUL WILLIAM C MAGELSSEN. AT BEIRUT, SYKIA, FOLLOWED BY ENERGETIC MEASURES BY THE PRESIDENT TO SECURE PUNISHMENT OF PERPETRATORS WASHINGTON, D. C.t Aug. 27.—-The state department has cabled Minister Leishman at Constantinople to demand instant and fullest reparation for the assassination of United States Vice Consul Wiliam C. Magelssen at Beirut. Acting in conjunction with the state department, and under instructions from the president, the navy department has ordered Rear Admiral Cotton to assemble the European squadron, consisting of the Brooklyn, the San Francisco and the Machias, and proceed to Turkish waters at once to enforce the demands made on the porte.
