NEWS OF THE MORNING.

The continental wires remained mute yesterday. .

The famous iron-clad Monadnock and her ; consort, the frigate Vanderbilt, arrived at San Francisco yesterday. The Monadnock encountered rongh weather on the coast, but she proved herself a staunch, seagoing craft. Thus far she has been the monarch of the Monitors. By Overland Mail we have detailed advices from St. Louis to June Ist. The journals of that data contain dispatches from Buffalo and Toronto relative to the Fenian invasion, and particulars of great fires in St. Louis.

Pardoned by the Governor. — The following named persons have been lately pardoned by the Governor :

John Stewart, convicted of a misdemeanor In in Francisco, and sentenced to the County Jail for six month.-'. Stewart has been pardoned because of a favorable statement of bis former employer, A. L. Tubbl ; and also became of a petition, numerously signed, requesting bis pardon ; and because of good conduct as a prisoner, and mitigating circumstances attending the commission of the offense.

Also, A. Richmond, convicted in Xl Dorado county of the .-roil- of grand larceny, and sentenced to one year hi the .*■'-.:• Prison. Richmond lias been pardoned on account of a petition to that effect from the Acting District Attorney wbo prosecuted him, the Sheriff and all the county officers of El Dorado county, aud the jurors who tried him, which petition was indorsed by the ,1„ i ,-> he«nrc whom h • was tried, who believed others to be the real criminals.

Also, Thomas Oonoily, convicted of murder in the second degree in Tuolumne county, and sentenced to ten ye irs in the State Prison. Conolly has been pardoned in accordance with the prayer of a numerously signed petition of respectable citizens of Tuolumne county, and because of good conduct as a prisoner, and the fact that it is believed he cannot live long. The Lieutenant Governor and all the officers of the prison abo recommended 'a',- pardon.

Likewise, Edward Rin<r, convicted of manslaughter in Son Mateo county, and sentenced to three years in the State Prison. King has been pardoned because of a petition signed by Fix if the jurors who trie the case, and a very large number of respsctable citizins, Including most of. the county officers ; and also because of a letter from O. ('. Pratt, the Judge before whom be was tried, stating that Ut sentence was too severe, and t>.n. 1., hj 8 opinion, the prisoner bad been sufficiently punished.

Tim Late Fights in San* Francisco. — The San Francisco Call of June 22d speaks of these disgraceful affairs as follows :

The prize fight between George Faylor and Johnny Perreau, alias Blackey, for a purse of $509, took plnca yesterday at Cunningham's, B in Bruno station, on the San Jose Railroad, in the presence of about (100 spectator?, who went out to witness the delightful scene of one man beating another nearly to death. After choosing judges and umpire, and arranging the preliminaries, the principals entered the ring and fought ninetyseven rounds In one hour and twenty-seven minutes, during which time Faylor punished Blackey in a most frightful manner, beating his ribs and breast till they were almost shapeless. During the last rotted it is sit.; that Blackey attempted to bite Faylor, who in return seized him by the cheek, when a cry of *' He's gouging" wa3 raised, and an angry altercation ensued, which was terminated by the referee giving the fight to Blackey. Soon after the termination of this Ugh! a purse was made up for Johnny Devine. alias the Chicken, and Thomas McGovcrn, alias Soap, to contend fir. These two men fought one hundred and sixteen rounds, 06---cupying one" hour and fifty-five minutes, and the victory was awarded to Soap, who pummeled the Chicken till he wished he had never aspired to war the honors of a prizefighter. After the fights hid terminated the party returned to town, when Blackey was found to be so badly Injured as to require surgical assistance, and Dr. Toland was summoned and dressed the wounds. One of those who witnessed the fight informs us that they were the best two fights that had ever been lough. iv the ring in California.

Los Angeles County. — The Wilmington Journal has the following on the advantages of this county :

" This county has long been noted for Its healthy bracing climate, and invalids who enter its confines are sure to be benefitted, unless disease had obtained a permanent foothold before the change was made. The heat of the plains is tempered by cool breezes from the ocean, which morning and even visit the valley. Pleasant drives abound in every direction. Over plains, where here and there cattle and sheep and horses are grazing ; up deep, romantic canyons, where many of Nature's freaks are fancifully portrayed, almost equaling the Devil's Canyon la novelty, and surpassing it in grandeur ; along beaches, where the ocean furnishes ford for meditation and where the young child and the old man can both find real enjoyment. On June Tth George Barry, who killed Thomas Shannon at the Mission Viejaj about a year ago, was sentenced to thirteen years Imprisonment. On the evening of June Bth, the jury in the case of Benjamin Mayfield, who murdered the highwayman John Mason, return* ' a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. The next day he was sentenced to be hung on August Ist. The counsel of the murderer Intend to carry the case to I higher Court if possible.

Matters at Helena (M. T.) — A correspondent of the Montana Post, writing from Helena, June Cth, says :

" No. 7 — A robber and j.orjur.-r, sod one who has tried xo swear away the lives of Innocent men. An old offender caught at last." "Only this, and nothing more " did the hangman's tree in Dry Gulch vouchsafe to tell, as it bore aloft upon that same strong arm, so often bruised by the twist of the rope, the body of John Crochet, or Trochin, moft familiarly known as " Preachy. " This man, who was about thirty-five years of age, came from the Boise country to Virginia City; represented himself a good man, "and worked Into the good graces of many of the citizens. Soon lifter he came here he was one of the night watch during a portion of last Winter. His being found with his neck in a noose, on the morning of the sth instant, is •supposed to be in some way connected with the following circumstance: On the night of the 2d instant, ** Frenchy " robbed Captain John Rogers of some $700, while the latter was under the influence of liquor. He afterwards returned some 1800, having spent the remainder in dissipation. He had been flourishing pistols and proving himself the bad man we find he always hod the reputation of being on the other side. He was lodged In Jail, awaiting bit trial tor assault and battery at the time be was taken by his executioners, the jail being forced by his captors.

Acts of the Montana Legislature Declared Void.— The Montana Poet of June 9th has the annexed :

The decision of Judge Munson in the case of Towns•end A Baker vs. Amos T. Laird i-, in effect, a judicial declaration that the Acts of the late Legislature are null and void. As the argument precludes the idea that an appeal to th-* Supreme Court will result otherwise than in a confirmation of the decision, our citizens must be prepared to meet the Inevitable consequences of the judgment. .Many opportunities of Grand -and wrong-doing will be afforded to the unprincipled; tut as law- are made to bind the villains of society, ond not the Rood men, those who have entered into contracts which they have it is (heir power either to perform or to nullify, can now -how plainly the stuff of which they are made, and whether their virtue is bogus or stifling. The popular verdict, generally just in the main, will Indorse the honest man who, having the newer to do evil, prefers to do well. Mich private injury may be occasioned by the decision, but it is just, •Mid our motto has ever been: "Let justice be done, though the heavens fall."

Judge Munson is Judge of the Third Judicial District in the Territory.

The" Golden Rule Shipwreck.— William E. Callen hits commenced suit in the Fifteenth District Court against the Central American Transit Company to recover $1,600 for his baggage lost by the wrecking of the steamship Golden Rule on the Roncador reef, May 20, ] - ■■!."', and 55,000 fir the bodily suffering, pain and anguish experienced by himself, wife'and children at the time. lie avers that the accident was owing to carelessness, negligence and misconduct, and want of attention and skill on the part of the ship's officers.

Nevada Countt. — The Transcript of June *22d says:

We understand that Flndley A Co., whose ledge ls located on Deer creek, are taking out a large quantity of very rich-looking rock. The quartz is rich in sulphured and shows a good deal of free gold. By good judges it is pronounced the best discovery made in tlth section during the past year. y«sterdav a .splendid ledge was struck out in the vicinity of Flat. The rock from the cropplngs shows lots of free gold, and k is estimated by those who have examined it that it will My fifty or sixty dollars to the ton. It hag been named the P. P. ledge. : ! ,*.

Sax Francisco.— A dispatch to the Bee yesterday baa the following :

Andrew McElroy, who assisted In the robbery of Adams, was arraigned before the Police Magistrate and Leld to ball In the sum of $2,000. Tbe steamers Monadnock and Vanderbilt arrived this morning, and are lying off Vallejo street. The Police Court Is investigating the aliened conspiracy case against Bawbelder and detective officer Ansbro.

Petition for Pardon. The friends of Sanford G. Gardiner, convicted of forging Cocos Island stock, nre making strong efforts to induce Governor Low to pardon him. He is under a sentence of three years imprisonment in the State prison.

The Yi-ba Railroad.— We Uwn, says the Marysville Appeal, that Col. VYilso« Is driving the Yuba Railroad this way at a good speed. Eight miles of the road are finished, and it is expected that the stages will commence connecting with the cars on the Ist of July.
