High Taxes at Santa Monica

A certain taxpayer in the city of the gentler persuasion went to the marshal's office this morning to pay her taxes. The marshal was out. The visitor was insistent and so the accommodating city attorney consented to ascertain the amount for which the citywould let her off this year. When told, that her taxes this year amounted to the modest sum of 9 cents she looked surprised and remarked that 'iltaxes arc higher this year. Last year I paid only 7 cents."—Santa Monica Signal.
