After a three days' successful Journey from ' San Francisco an automobile party of four \ arrived ■in Los /Angeles last night shortly after 8:30 o'clock. Although no record was: attempted, the members of the party report that splendid time was made, almost. without an. accident.- Those in the party included Paul Cowles," superintendent . of ' the Associated Press In San . Francisco; A. L,. Hawley of Seattle, J. M. Grayblll of Seattle, and J. P.Hanna of Aurora, 111. The machine used was a 40-horse-power four-cylinder Winton, model X, 1906 make. Substitute New Wheel

Not desiring to take any chances on losing a wheel - a halt was made and the damage repaired. A new wheel was substituted. The point where the halt was made was j about 20 miles this side of Santa Barbara. This was the only accident on tbe run. In the vicinity where the Hawley party repaired their machine another party in a Peerless was found awaiting the return of a section of their machine which wus broken down ' and had been sent by wagon back to Santa Barbara to be repaired. The latter party said they had already been delayed 24 hours. Tho Hawley ' party left before the broken parts had, been returned and It is not known .whether, they t*e yet on their way to Lps Angeles.

When seen at • the Van Nuys hotel, where the four members registered last night, Mr. Cowles said that the roads all the way from San Francisco were in excellent condition. In places whoro much dust is ordinarily encountered they found little or none. vrt'Ufcfj I **-^*^!

The only disagreeable feature of the trip was the intense heat that was experienced almost all the way from San Francisco. In ' the Salinas valley the heat was almost unbearable.' It was made all the worse from the fact that the machine was uncovered. In the vicinity of Paso. Robles severe-- heat was also encountered. . ■

Mr. Hawley,' the owner of the machine, and his nephew, J. P, Hanna, acted" as chauffeurs of | the party.

Mr. Hawley .is president :of \ the Trustee company • and development corporation of Seattle. I Mr. Grayblll is private secretary ' to > Mr. Hawley, and formerly was secretary to, Col, Daehl, general manager of the Associated Press In Chicago. , ■ '.'!'..

The run from San Francisco was one purely for pleasure. Mr. Cowles will return this evening on the Owl.

Besides giving- details of the trip Mr. Cowles said that rebuilding -was progressing • rapidly ■In San - Francisco and that there was no question' about the future of the city. ' He says that In the course of a few years It will be the same busy, thorough metropolitan : city that It was in the past, but built on a much safer plan.
