The Destitute Relieved. — A man and woman — husband and wife — have been living in a shanty corner of J and Twenty sixth streets, in a state of extreme destitution and ill health— the former on the verge of death. Dr. Simmons, County Physician, being informed of their coudition on Thursday night, extended to them all the assistance in his power, and we are pleased to announce that the Howard Benevolent Society took the ci«e iv charge yesterday morning- Any cases of distress of a Munlar character will be promptly relieved by tilt Society, m. ■ statement ot the case b'-inu left with the Steward at the depot, on the alley between J and X, Filth and Sixth streets.

Bmm or Mic. Wood.— The benefit of Mrs. Wood, and her last appearance in our city, will take place thia evening at the Forrest, on which occasiou the popular play of tUe " Unequal Match,"' and other attraction.-, will be presented. The late attendance on the Theater has not been very encour.igiug, but we trust amende will be made in giving this lady, this evening, a benefit that will be commensurate with her talents und eflorts to please.

TaUQBAPH Celebration— Extra Train.— The Sacramento Valley X tilroad Company, lor the accommodation of rcsidunts in the interior of the county who desire to attend the celebration in this city on Monday next, will dispatch a train of cars from Folsom at 6}^ r. n., and returning, leave this city at \\% p. v. Si i:kam en to Athenei'm. — The members of the Sacramento A.theneum are requested to meet >tt the usual hour this (Saturday) evening, to take action in regard to participating in the general Celebration on Monday nest. At a meeting held last eveui'.i^, a committee waa appointed to confer with the Gi-neral Committee in this connection.

Manila ioijtke. — The case of Domingo Nun, indicted for manslaughter, in the homicide ot Lorenzi Silva, n-'ur the Gas Works, on the 15th of May I iht, was called in the District Court, yesterday, and continued, on motion of the Drstrict Attorney, tiii next term.

Religious.— Rev. Mr. Benton will preach tomorrow, in the Congregational Church, on Sixth street— in the morning, on "Church Manners;" iv the evening, on "The latest triumph of our time." Services will be held at I<>;£ a. m., and 7j-£ p. m.

FIXE Alarm. — An alarm of flre occurred about half past seven o'clock, last evening, caused by the burning of rubbish on M street, between Eighth and Ninth stn-oU.
