LATER INTELLIGENCE.

I Advance on the Potomac. Chicago, March 2d — 3:30 r. m. Baltimore, Feb. 2Sth. — At daybreak on Monj day morning, the last of the advance guard, I consisting of the Twenty Pennsylvania | Regiment, crossed the Potomac by the rope • ferry, and took possession of Harper's Ferry. On the next day, the provisions and transporting troops arrived, and the guard was consid- j I erably reinforced. Baltimore and Charlestown : j are now occupied by our troops, and Lou don ; Hights are also occupied to prevent a flank j movement by the enemy. The rebels retired. Only about twenty were captured. The people at Bolivar and neighboring places, which our troops occupied, were in a condition bordering on starvation, comparatively few inhabitants remaining in that town. All profess Union sentiments, and express great delight in being relieved from the thraldom which has op- : pressed them for the last six months. Many i refugees are returning. The right wing, of the i army has considerably curtailed the rebel ( ! territory of Virginia, and made a foot- \ hold for itself which all the power of the rebellion cannot, wrest from it. So far ; no opposition has been given to our advance. i There has not been a hostile «hot fired. The | troops are in excellent condition, and well protected from the inclemency of the weather. General Banks has established his head quar- ! ; ters on the road between Harper's Ferry and ; ; Bolivar. The enemy fired twelve shells at the trains on ! ! Monday, near Berlin. Only two exploded; no damage was done. There is nothing reliable from Winchester. A ; current report says the town is considerably re- ! inforced. Another Tax Bill. Washington, March Ist. Specials to the New York papers say the cxi cisc internal duties bill will be reported from the Committee on Ways and Means, separately '■ from the tariff. One hundred and fifty millions , are expected from these two sources. inlon Feeling at Nashville. A dispatch just received by the Navy Department, from Flag Officer Foote, says the gunboat Cairo, which preceded Nelson's brigade, | arrived at Nashville amid the waving of hand- j i kerchiefs.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company have commenced the reconstruction of the bridge at Harper's Ferry, and expect to have the road in operation to Wheeling in twenty days. lancey Tomes Back. A private letter from Paris says Yancev has left for Alabama, via Havana, fully satisfied that none of the great powers of Europe will recognize the Confederate Government. Senator from Maryland. Advices from Annapolis state that the nomination and election of Reverdy Johnson to the U. S. Senate is reduced to a certainty, the coutest being narrowed down between him and Henry Winter Davis. Advices from Tennessee. Clakksville, Term., Feb. 26th. The latest advices represent everything quiet. Several divisions of the army have arrived. The report that rebel outrages were committed on the people there before leaving, is confirmed. The Texas Rangers are said to have stolen every horse they could find from friend or foe. They remained iv the city until within an hour of the arrival of our advance. The Nashville people say Johnston, Floyd and Pillow are concentrating forces at Murfreesboro, but they cannot yet have more than twenty thousand there, and much demoralized. The report of the rebels being surrounded at Murfreesboro is probably without foundation in fact. Rebels Beaten again In North Carolina. Washington, March Ist. Dispatch from Commodore Goldsborough to to Secretary Welles from Roanoke Island, Feb. 23d, says a reconnoitering party sent up the Chowan river has returned. It did not go beyond Winton. The enemy at this point was in considerable force, and opened a heavy fire upon the vessel iv advance with artillery and musketry, which induced our force to attack in return, both by land and water, with the guns of the vessels that could bo brought to bear on the enemy. They soon took to flight. The houses occupied as quarters were burned. Not a man on our side was injured. There is nothing received official. Columbus, Ry. Telegrams do not show the rebel evacuation of Columbus, uor has any official imformation been received from Buell since the occupation of Nashville. Passport Order Rescinded. Nkw Youk, March Ist. Secretary Sevrard"s order requiring persons leaving the country to obtain passports is rescinded. Later from Europe. Halifax, March Ist. The steamship Arabia has arrived from Liverpool, with advicos to February 15th. Provisions were quiet. Consols §1%. Three French papers think the Mexican question will lead to the fall of Palmerston's Cabinet. Maximilian is said positively to have accepted the Mexican throne. The Tuscarora is reported to have gone to Gibraltar, where the Sumter remains. In Lord Russell's speech it is stated that the Government had protested against the destruction of harbors by the stone blockade. The American Government had denied anvsucli intention. It is understood the address from the Freucli Chambers will contain a mild rebuke to the Pope, for not listening to the conciliatory prop '.-irions of France for the settlement of the Roman question. Our Troops in Virginia. The Federal forces which crossed the Potomac last Wednesday have occupied Harper's Ferry, and a considerable portion of the country on both banks of the Shenandoah.
