JOHN H. BANKHEAD.

Aspirant for Democratic Leadership in the House. The selection by the Democrats of a leader for the Fifty-sixth Congress of the United States will find a number of contestants for honors in opposition to Mr. Bailey of Texas, the leader in the last Congress. One of the prominent ones is Congressman John H. Bankhead of Alabama, who has a strong following.

His friends say he will have the support of the East and Southern States, which would indicate that the gold Democrats are not opposed to him. He is a selfmade man,-50 years of age, and all his education haß come through his own efforts. He is a veteran of the Confederate army, and since the war has been conspicuously in politics. His first Congress was the Fiftieth.
