Memorial to Congress to Subsidize a lino or Steamers to Australia Col. F. A. Bee to Represent the Chamber at Washington. A speolal meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held at eleven o'clock yesterday morning, President R. B. Strain in the ob»ir. Ho stated that the meeting had been called to hear the report of the Special Committee relative to a. subsidy for ft line of steamers to Australia. Before calling for the report, Mr. Swain read the following despatch to the NATIONAL BOARD OF TRADE. San Francisco, Dec. 7th, 1870. To the President of the National Board of Trade Buffalo. The Chamber of Commtroe of San Franolioo has appointed by telegraph delegates to your Body, who are now in the Eastern State*. Not being oertat* whether they will attend, this Chamber re-. quests that the National Board of Trade will eoneider the importance of establishing direot steam ' communication- between the Paoifls Coast and Australia, including the valuable Islands of the Southern Paoifie Ocean, and that yoor Body will petition Congress immediately to extend the protection of Government, and grant a liberal subsidy to alflrst'Class line of steamers. Hopkins ' then , presented the report of the Special Committee, which is as follows: To the Chamber of Commerce of San Franoiteo: Your Commute appointed at the special meeting held on the 2d, instant, to prepare a memorial to ' Congrefs.for the legislation necessary to subsidise a lino of firat-olaaa steamers between San Franeiioo and porta in Australia, the Fiji, Navigators. Society and Hawaiian Islands, beg leave to rtport that they have performed their duty, and herewith tubmi t the result of their labors: ■ . . "The memorial to Congress gives compilations of the population, commerce, and parsenger movements of the Australian Colonies and New Zealand. It speaks of the vast benefits that would miwuo to this country by the establishment of a first-olfiss line of steamers from this port to Australia- The Chamber urges Congress, in its present session, to pass a law oentaining all the provisions of Senate Bill No. 733, introduced at the last session by Senator Cornelius i Cole. .^^ ■ •'.- • On motion of Mayor Selby, the report was received and adopted as the sonse of the Chamber. Mr. A. D bblee - moved that the resolutions be adopted and that the Secretary be iostru^ted to have the memorial and resolutions printed under the supervision of the Committee.

Mr. A. Dibbleo, from the Committee appointed to confer with the Prod uoe Exchange, relative to the rates of tolls and wharfage, submitted a lengthy report. They reviewed the whole subject, and came to the conclusion that it is not prudent to reoommed any further reductions for tho present, aa the revenue is required for the many repair! neaessary at the water front. The Committee also reported that the Harbor Commiseioners had reduced the ratea on grain and Hour. potatoes and other vegetables, from 12X to 10 cents After some discussion, on motion of Ale Otis. the report was received and placed on file for future consideration. The Chamber then adjourned.
