THE COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION.

Eleven Contestants Enter for the Prize. Hon. G. Wiley Wells, General George | Stoneman and Major George E, Garrl, threo of the fivo gentlemen selected by Congressman Pacheco to conduct the competitive examination of candidates 1 for the position of cadet at the Naval I Academy from the Fourth District, met ■ at the Supreme Court room at 10 a. v. , yesterday. Hon. 8. 0. Houghton, of; San Jose, and Hon. G. W. Schell, of Modesto, the other members of the | committee, fa'led to pnt in an appearance. The Board organized by electing Mr. Wells Chairman and Major Gard Secretary. Drs. Griffin and Widney ware selected as medical examiners. Eleven contestants, as follows, were present: J. F. Lewis, aged 18 years 9 months, Carpentrria, Santa Barbara county, native of the same place. This young man is over age, as the limit is from 14 to 18 years. Eugene Bates, aged sixteen years 1$ months, Santa Barbara; a native of Wisconsin. E. A. Merriam, aged 17. years 5 months, Apex, San Diego county; born in Washington City. J. 8. McMullen, aged 15 years, Wil, miugton, Los Angeles county; a native of Wisconsin. Godfrey Burdell, aged 15 years 7 months, Los Angeles; born in this city. Julius B. Conterno, aged 15 years, 4 months; Wilmington; a native of Wisconsin. Arthur C. Greenwell, aged 10 years, 4 months, Santa Barbara; born in Sau Fraucisco. Leslie R. Hewitt, agod 14 years, 9 months, Los Angeles; a native of Washington Territory. Charles A. Stephens, aged 15 years 5 months, Los Angeles; a native of New York. Milton L. Parcels, r.ged lOyoars, Los Angeles; a native of Illinois. . Charles B. Bell, aged 17 years, 8 months, Los Angeles; a native of Louisiana. Hurry M. Schiller, of San Diego; Willo G. Green, of Kern county; Albert Lindley, of Los Angeles, and Frank Hopkins, who had given notice of their intention to compete, did not appear. F. J. Lewis was rejected because he was overage, the limit being 18 yeara, and M. L. Parcels on physical grounds.

The contestants were er.amined in the following studies, three hours being given to each: Arithmetic, geography, grammar and dictation, tne latter including spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc. In addition the hoys were subjected to a rrjid examination in histo.y and other subjects not down in the list p escribed by the Navy Departme it, by General Stonemau. The examination lasted until 10 P. M., the boys all showing a quicknes-s in answering the questions propounded that reflected great credit on their teachers.
