HUGH J. SMITH.

The Next Councilman from the Eighth Ward. The regular Democratic nominee for councilman of the Eighth ward is the above named gentlemen, wbo is one of our leading citizens, being a resident of the Angel city for eight years past. Mr. Smith is a large property holder, and having resided in tbe Eighth ward ever since his advent in Loa Angeles, is a gentleman well qualified for the position which he seeke, and will undoubtedly be elected, notwithstanding thst certain Republicans have persuaded an Independent Democrat to enter the field to draw votes from Mr. Smith, tbe regular Democratic nominee. This scheme, no doubt, will not work, as tbe Democratic voters of the Eighth ward do not propose that their ballots shall assist in electing a Kepuoiican by voting for an independent candidate. Mr. Smith waa the unanimous choice of the Democratic convention that selected him ; all other candidates for the nomination are now heartily supporting hia election, and he will certainly be elected by a large majority, as he meritoriously deserves. The Eighth ward will have an excellent representative in Mr. Smith, who knows exactly tbe wants of hie district, and no one would achieve more for liia constituents than the gentleman referred to.
