IN SOCIAL LIFE

A very delightful and beautiful reception was given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Jaro-Salr yon Schmidt and Mrs. Frederick T. Griffith at the home of Mrs. Griffith, on West Twenty-eighth street, in honor of Mrs. Hahn o New York. In the drawing room and dining room daylight was excluded and a prolusion of flowers used. About the dining room were pink sweet peas and carnations. These were on mantel and buffet and scattered ovei the large table were clusters of ferns. Pink candelabra softened the effective decorations. Mrs. J. J. Melius, J. H. Utley and Hancock Banning presided in the dining room, assisted by the Misses Mullins. Dorsey, Cash and "Van Dyke. The drawing room was bright with columbino and vines of nasturtiums, making a stri'kng contrast against the soft tones of the wall. The fireplace was bidden hy a mass of delicate ferns. In a raised alcove t> the light of the room was placed the punch bowl with refreshing contents, which was served by F. K. Ainswortu. the Misses Wedemeyer, Cole, Hamilton, Patton and Shorb. In the hail were potted plants and ferns. A screen wns formed of those behind which a mandolin orchestra was placed, the music being delightfully soft and sweet. Tne only bit ot color ill the hall was a large basket of light blue Mowers standing in the fireplace. Mrs Griffith and Mrs. you Schmidt were assisted in receiving by Mrs. S. B. Hahn Mrs. T. If. which was to have met this afternoon at Mrs. Peres' on Washington street, has been postponed indefinitely. Colonel J. J. Ayers is now living upon his orange ranch at Azusa and enjoying life to the fullest extent. He was in the city yesterday and said thac he would apply himself to writing bis history of California. 8. G. Marsbutz and wife have returned from San Francisco, where they have been visiting for the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Slauson entertained informally with a dinner last night, complimentary to Mrs. Eugene E. Smith of Sacramento St. Faith's guild of the St. John's church will give a Washington tea at the Marlborough school this evening at 8 p. ru. All friends are invited, Alonzo Baiiey, recently a merchant of Globe, Aril., has purchased a home on Tenth and Main street-* where he and his family will hereafter reside and where his chidren can have full educational advan tages. A. C. Bilike of the Hollenbeck wires from Chicago to the effect that he will reach home via Salt Lake City on Friday next.

A NEW TRUSTEE NEEDED Mrs. Winston Selected as Such for the Bradbury Estate Mrs. Simona Bradbury and Colonel John Bradbury, trustees of the estate of JL. 1.. Bradbury, deceased, yesterday filed j a petition against Simona. Minerva, | Louisa and Lewis Bradbury to have Rosi ario Winston appointed a trustee with ■ plaintiffs under the|witl. When the elder Bradbuiy died in 1893 he left a will in which, besides Mrs. Bradbury and her son John. Judge Bicknell was appointed executor. The latter resigned his trust in 18114. The provisonß of the will are. howver. tbat in case of death or other disability of either of the executors, the survivors shall name another one. Mrs. Rosario Winston is a daughter of the de- : ceased and of one of the petitioners, and a sister of the other and their choice. o,l] of the defendants are of age except ( Lewis, who is only 4 years old.

The Work ot a Joker There was great grief among the boys at tbe bigh school yesterday when they went to get their bicycles to ride home and found five of thorn missing. Information was sent at once to the police and Officer Steele was detailed to make an investigation. He found the boys ready to swear out a hundred complaints if necessary, if only the wheels could be found. A search in the basement revealed the missing cycles innocently stored away in an adjoining room, tho work of a practical joker.

Suicidal and Destructive Mrs. America Nalin, a native of Indiana, married. 53 years of age, who has had repeated attacks of epilepsy for six years, which for the last six months have been almost continuous, was committed to Highland yesterday by Judge Van Dyke. Tho woman is suicidal, homicidal and destructive. She resided at 1048 Bnrtlett steet.

Englishmen and the Birthday The birthday of Queen Victoria was observed very informally here. The St. George society had no official programme, but the members of the society spent the evening in drinking toasts to the quien and wishing that she might long preserve her good health.

Spiritualists' Camping Place The camp meeting seems inseparable, as an institution, from the plans of Spiritualists. Those of Los Angeles and vicinity are taking tbe preliminary steps to nrgannizo one for Southern California. Committees have been appointed and are engaged iv selecting a suitable site for the purpose. It will doubtless be near one of the seashore resorts.
