CITY EMPLOYES WILL - GET HOLIDAYS AND PAY

NEW ORDER AFFECTS MEN IN

ALL DEPARTMENTS

Councilman Barney Healy Takes the Lead In Council and Secures Change Which Will Give Park and street Men Increased Privileges

Hereafter the employes in the park and street departments will be allowed ft half holiday on Saturday and all legal holidays, under pay, just as are the employes of the city having their quarters In the city hall. This Rctlon was taken by the council yesterday on a motion by Councilman Barney llmly of the Eighth ward.

This city father— happy phrase— has been working on this scheme for the betterment of the condition of the employes in the various' departments of the city for some time. This scheme of allowing a half holiday and pay to the men working In these departments will, of course, add somewhat to the expense of running the city, but the Eighth ward representative had the united support of his colleagues on the measure, as It Is believed it will permanently benefit the service in the two departments In question.

It has been the custom In the pnst to lay these mon oft when they did not work on legal holidays, the same as any other day. The employes of the city In the various offices are given a half holiday on Saturday afternoon and all legal holidays. It was, therefore, decided that the system should be extended to take In the men working In the parks and on the streets.

The councllmen believe that by allowing the men In these departments this little extra pay, with the attendant privileges, the condition of the employes will Improve and the scheme will result in the city's getting more work out of the men than has been the case in the. past. The pay of the men is low, compared to wages paid elsewhere, and many of them have large families to support. It Is the desire of the city's legislative body to improve the condition and environment of the men whenever possible.
