Lntrr from Oregon. The P. M. S. S. Co.'s steam propeller Fremont arrived on Sunday, 70 hours from Oregon. She brings 70 passengers, a mail and four days later news. The election excitement is increasin the territory. . A territorial Temperance Convention has been held at Salem. It was unanimously resolved to procure the adoption of the Maine Liquor law by the Legislature. Two vessels lately arrived from Queen Charlottes' Island, confirms the unfavorable reports from the gold mines. The brig Potomac wrecked at the mouth of Columbia river, has been condemned, and ordered sold at Marshal's sale. A party of miners, mostly foreigners, have sailed on the Archibald Gracic, for Guaymas. — Their object is to take possession of a district in Sonora, Mexico, where gold mines arc known to exist. The body of Surgeon Rutter, U. S. N., who was drowned a few weeks since, has been found near the old fort. The new Whig, paper has not yet made its appearance. Acquittal. — It will be recollected by our readers that we' published, a few days since, an account of an altercation between Mr. John Smith, of Martinez, and Capt. Howes, in which the latter was shot through the heart by the former. The examination came off yesterday, at Martinez, the result of which was the acquittal of Mr. Smith, no evidence being adduced to dhow that he acted otherwise than in self defence. Mr. Smith is a brother of Col. Win. M. Smith. «
