A chemical fife engine for Healdsburg has been ordered, and most wisely, as there are but few places in the city where sufficient water could be obtained for any other apparatus, says the Flag,

They have discovered a bug in Tehama that bores into the hardest wood with its gimlet- head. It takes a smart stroke of a nail hammer to crush its head, and then it explodes like a precus3ion cap.

0. C. Carpenter,' an experienced miner and good prospector, has returned to Prescott, after an absence of several days, bringing with him samples of very rich silver and copper ores from a new district to the north of Tiptop. : The copper ore, especially, ir the ! section from which' it came, is said to be immense. — [Arizona Miner.

' The Marysville Appeal says : "The grain crops in all parts of Sutter county are reported very promising. A farmer living low down on the Sacramento river bottom says the ranches all along present a healthy appearance. 'The farmers on Feather river are also promised large crops, and some are necessarily sowing late."

A new steamer, to be called the Columbia, is now being built for the Oregon Steamship Company, by John lloach, of Philadelphia. August l.eidmann left for the East yesterday to I bring the steamer to this coast. The Columbia is expected

to eclipse any steamship ever sent to this coast in the completeness of her fittings and the beauty of her model.

A destructive fire broke out in Russell's livery stable, San Andreas, Sunday. The stable and dwelling house of Mr. Russell were burned, together with thirteen horses, two cows, two stages, and about ten buggies. Dr. Robinson's dwelling house, stable, horse and carriage were also destroyed. The lireissupposedto be the work of an incendiary. Mr. Russell possessed one of the finest appointed ' stables in the mountains, containing many valuable bursts, and as the loss wa3 total it will be severely felt. — [Amador Sentinel.

Some of the sheep men, being out of feed, and unable , to procure any, have turned their bands out to hunt their living without herding, except to take a look around occasionally and put out poisoned beef for coyotes and other wild animals. Should any more severe snow-storms occur the loss in sheep will be ___■______ We think. the heaviest part 1 of the winter is over, and with a little pleasant weather the grass would come up sufficiently, together with what can be obtained browsing, to afford enough feed . to : bring the remaining sheep out all right.— Journal.
