DEVOTION TO DUTY RESULTS IN DEATH

John J. McCarthy of Engine Company No. 1 Dies of His Injuries.

OAKLAND, Feb. 25.— From Injuries sustained last August at the fire that destroyed the First Baptist Church, John J. McCarthy, an extraman of Engine Company No. 1. died last evening at his residence, 1712 Ninth street. McCarthy was caught under falling wires and was held in the debris of embers and water for some time. Typhoid fever ensued and developed consumption. The dead fireman was 38 years old. He leaves a wife. His parents, four brothers and two sisters survive. The funeral will be held to-morrow morning from St. Patrick's Church. The interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
