Oakland Chamber of Commerce Owes Him Much.

OAKLAND, March 17.— With the opening of the home of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce this city has become the center of one of the most powerful commercial organizations of the Pacific Coast, the membership of which includes all of the foremost business and professional men of Oakland. Added strength has been given to the organization by the consolidation .with it of the Oakland Board of Trade, which for- several years occupied a prominent position in the movement to develop Oakland and Alameda County. - ... This consolidation brings to notice an unusual story of a man's self-sacrificing devotion to public good. At the head of the Oakland Board of Trade was H. C. Capwell. His progressive administration had placed that organization to the fore In the- work of advancing Oakland's interests. As president of the Oakland Boafd* of JTrade he gained personal and commercial distinction and honors, which weie necessarily of themselves helpful In advancing his own concerns. The time came when there seemed to be a need of a large and broader organization, such a one as is the new Chamber of Commerce. As soon as the idea of consolidation—for only by a. consolidation could the success of the new move pc assured—President Capw£ll of the Board of Trade became "an earnest, enthusiastic worker to this end. He believed that Oakland would gain Immeasurably by such an organization as the Chamber of Commerce. To this' end President Capwell surrendered all claim to officialrecognition in the new body, and to facilitate the union. he abandoned all distinction his position had given him. So, instead of being president of the Oakland Board of Trade, Mr. Capwell Is an active laborer in the ranks of the Chamber of Commerce. He refused any official recognition, so that there shbuld be no hitch, no obstacle in the union of the two organizations. This is why the Chamber of Commerce, strong and active, has come to Oakland.
