ICE STILL HOLDS THE COLUMBIA

PORTLAND, Jan. lE.— The steamphip Columbia of the San Francisco and Portland Steamship Company's line is still fast in the ice three miles above St. Helena in the Columbia Hiver. .

The liner Aragonia is endeavoring to extricate the Columbia. The Aragonia 5s bucking into the ice pack from the lower side and it is hoped that tlie combined efforts of , the ' boats will prove effective. ,\*^ *Lr~~ The steamer rteanol«» of the North Pacific Steamship Company, which has been tied up at Pt. Helena for the last two days, made two Ineffectual efforts to break the ice today. The temperature is rising on the upper river rind a change in the situation is looked for soon.

A rapid thaw may cause the volume of heavy .ice ir. the river at all points above to do considerable damage. The jams will give way and the ice will come down in a bunch.
