MAJOR J.E. M'ELRATH DIES IN TENNESSEE.

Passes Away While on Visit to His Old Home in the South

OAKLAND, May 7.— Major John E. McElrath, an attorney well known throughout California, died yesterday at his old home in Madisonville, Tenn., where he had been visiting. McElrath was 63 years old, a native of Tennessee. McElrath served in the southern army during the civil war and was a prominent figure in democratic politics. Graceful in his speech and manners, Major McElrath leaves a memory of one tie broken that linked the sentlment of the poet with the progress of the present day. Besides his wife there are nine surviving children. The body will be brought here for interment.
