AMUSEMENTS.

The opera house stage last evening presented a series of pictures of wonderful brilliancy and effectiveness, on the presentation of the pantomime spectacle, The Mistletoe Bough, given by the voting people of St. Paul's church in aid of Bt. Paul's hospital. The participants did themselves great credit. Though all were amateurs, there was littie of the awkwardness and self-

consciousness usually visible in sucb performances. The minuet was marred by bad stage management, there being little room for the dancers, and the masses of non-participants on the stage detracted from the color and movement effect of the principals. The calciums were atrociously handled, their chief purpose seeming to consist in making co dim a light aa to obscure the performers. But despite evident shortcomings on the part of those in control, the affair was an unquestionable success. A delicious little bit of work was done by Mrs. John W. Mitchell as the bride in the act where she hides in the chest. It was well conceived and well executed, being characterized by daintiness, gracefulness, and a complete picturing of a playtul little beauty. Mrs. Mitchell has the stage to herself for an act, but maintains the interest of the audience throughout. Major Elderkin and his assistants supplied the comic element in generous quantities. One of the prettiest scenes is the Maypole dance. Here the performers are all youngsters, and they dance in a free, graceful way, that could not be excelled. A detailed mention of all the excellencies of the performance cannot be given here; suffice it to say that it is beautiful, novel and interesting from beginning to end, and that many of those taking part display genuine dramatic merit.
