SILVER LEGION SHOWS RICH ORE

SUMMER ACTIVITY AROUND SEARCHLIGHT

Average Value of Ore Said to Be $300 to the Ton — Jasper Group Sold to A. K. Wright for $10,000

Special to The Herald.

SEARCHLIGHT, Nev., June 9.— Activity at Nob Hill during the past week has been more pronounced than for years past, and at the rat^ strikes are being made and properties changing hands, this is destined to soon become a new addition to the tributary camps in and about Searchlight. Following the announcement that the Silver Legion has resumed in its old workings, comes the news that the entire east drift on the 85-foot level Is in ore running to almost any kind of an assay desired. An 18-inch streak opened shows wire and native silver In large quantities and large values in gold are on the increase as the drift penetrates the water strata. Assays from this streak show values as high as $1000 per ton, while the entire three feet of ore will average $3CO per ton. As the ore lies in lenses, there is no way of telling how many other rich streaks permeate the 50-foot ledge, as no crosscut has been run. The rich ore is being sacked and about twenty tons are now awaiting shipment. As soon as this is on its way to the smelters another shipment wiii be started. It is estimated that no less than 250 tons can be produced within the next six weeks.

Rich Ore in Sphinx

Development on the El Dorado, located Just east of the Legion, has brought to light the same character of rock as was brought in at the Legion when It was at a depth of fifty feet. In a winze in the Sphinx tunnel a body of ore has been uncovered at a depth of fifty-five feet that assays $109 per ton in silver and goH, the gold values averaging $27.45 to the ton. The entire workings are in ore, and the width of the vein will be determined at the 100-foot level, where crosscutttng will be done. As soon as this work Is completed a raise will be put to the surface and a hoist installed, the ore being "chuted" to the millslte on the north of the workings. This is the first effort made to work the Sphinx for several years owing to lack of money, and the property is soon to start up full blast, having arranged for complete funds with which to construct a mill and treat the lower grade ores while shipping the high-grade rock Ample water facilities have been developed and the property is now in shape to quickly merge into a big shipper. The ledge from which the ore is taken outcrops twenty-seven feet wide on the surface, and th# paystreak is five feet In width. This is one of the mines worked fifty years ago by the chloriders.

Jumper Group Sold

A deal was closed this week whereby A. K. Wright of San Jacinto, Cal., takes over the Jumper group of five claims, for which he paid $10,000. The property is opened by a 25-foot shaft, from which some rich snipping ore has been taken. It also lies Just south and paralleling the Silver Legion, and also adjoins the Eldorado Sphinx. Arrangements have been made by the purchaser to immediately put a force to work sinking the shaft to 100 feet, when drifting will be inaugurated. The price paid is considered very low considering the location of the territory. Searchlight Belle to Sink General Manager Frank Straub has arranged to have 100 feet additional sinking added to the shaft of the Searchlight Belle, and it Is estimated this work will bring the shaft to the water level. Further plans call for the expenditure of considerable money in other development with a view to Immediately placing the mine on a paying basis as soon as the water levet and main ore body are reached.

Fortuna a Bonanza

The east drift on the Fortuna is being driven to connect with a shaft sunk on the vein 200 feet east of the main workings, and as soon aa this is completed the — ork of stoping out ore between the 200-feet level and the surface will begin. Extreme hot weather makes the workings warm, and until this additional air passage Is opened only drifting can be resorted to. General Manager A. A. McKnight has made a careful measurement of the ore lying between the surface and the lowest workings, and sees steady production for months to come. The rock being taken from below runs an average of $265 in sold and silver, while there are streaks of ore that carry horn silver away up into the pictures. Twelve men are now employed, and this force will shortly be Increased and work continued throughout the summer despite the torrid weather.

Eldorado Consolidated

Development on the Eldorado Consolidated has brought in a fine ledge carrying pay rock, and indications are that this property will show the same fine values in gold as the Daisy Belle, located but a short distance away, and which, before a cloudburst filled the shaft, brought forth fancy figures in production. Lying In line with the Daisy Belle, it is believed that the same ledge that traverses that property finds its way Into the Consolidated's ground. A shaft i: being sent down, and preparations are being made for .'rifting when the 100foot level Is reached. Besides the ledge now being developed there is another and larger one that prospecting shows to contain good values from the grass roots. Strikes on adjoining properties Buch as the Silver Legion has hastened work on the Consolidated, for as soon as they begin taking out shipping ore a regular freighting line Is to be established connecting Nob Hill with railroad transportation.
