Mining on tor Salmon. — A correspondeßt of the Union, who writes from Elk City, September 2ntb, gives the annexed account of mining prospects in that vicinity :

Since my last communicate n the days of Washoe and Fraser river are visiting our miners. Excitement is high, and appears to increase daily. Salmon river is on the tongue and in the imagination of almost every one. If the halt be true that is floating through our atmosphere of the rich discoveries on the Salmon, the Golden State must hear of " big strikes" in Washington Territory, where fortunes will be had in an incredible short space of time. Californians themselves say that it supersedes anything they have witnessed in that State. Twenty dollars to the pan has been taken, and the precious metal is found where it jets out in the richest profusion from the quartz. It is reported that a two thousand dollar piece has been found, and some a tfirm that the most ardent expectations are surpassed. Ten days will suffice to test these fabulous rumors. We hope they are true. The trade of the past week has been very good ; 400 ounces of dust have been taken by our tradesmen. From the fact that many are leaving to Winter in the Valley, who Bpend little or no money with our merchants prior to departure, and knowing that this is over one hundred ounces increase from the week previous, this is sufficient evidence of nourishing times aud at least a little money. When Sprißg opens there will be a ru-h for the Nez Perces, because it will be justified, in my opinion. The weather is cool and frosty. The Indians are not troublesome. One Scott, of California, was buried here yesterday, being the first death in this mining region.

Thb Defiance.— The steamer Defiance, after a resting spell of several months, resumed her place yesterday morning on the river, and started for Maryaville.
