Students honored by society

East Los Angeles College students won five awards at the American Society of Engineers and Architects 17th annual Awards Banquet held at the Golden Palace Restaurant. Top honor, a $5OO scholarship, was awarded to Peter Kappertz of Monterey Park, a graduating architecture student at ELAC. The second place award, a $lOO scholarship, was awarded to Michael Marerosian of Montebello, who also is a graduating architecture student at ELAC. Both of these winners were selected from 10 finalists from all the competing Southern California area community colleges. Applicants were judged on the basis of

leadership, scholastic achievement, motivation and service to their college and community. Marderosian, ELAC Engineers and Architects Student Chapter president, also was prsented with an award for outstanding leadership among architectural students and Kappertz won the award for highest scholastic achievement.

East Los Angeles College students also won the competition among Southern California community colleges for theirs scale model on the theme “A Habitable Space in the 21st Century.” Those contest entries are judged by members of the American Society of Engineers and Architects with each college submitting one entry.
