Cancer Takes More Than Dollars and Cents to Find a Cure

Many believe that all the American Cancer Society does is raise money for research. While such fund-raising is a major part of the organization’s function, it is far from the only thing it accomplishes. The society has many programs for cancer victims and their families. All of these services and programs may be arranged by telephoning the San Diego Chapter of the society at 2994200. Direct Services Information and guidance: Provides information about cancer and its treatment and assistance in obtaining services from other sources. Transportation; Volunteer drivers transport patients to and from medical appointments, but the patients must be

ambulatory and have no bone involvement. While this service is offered in Coronado, all requests must be made through the San Diego office. Hospital-type equipment: Provides equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, for those without Medicare, MediCai or private insurance, after physician approval and financial assessment. The society also has what is known as the Little Red Toy Box at Kaiser, the University of California at San Diego and Children’s Hospitals. The youngsters can unlock the “box” and select a toy after surgery.

Blood program; The society has established a blood reserve fund at the San Diego Blood Bank to help defray costs to cancer patients.
