Navy Swim Association Awards Presented

The Coronado Navy Swim Association (CNSA) held its annual long course awards banquet on Oct. 29 at the Naval Amphibious Base Officers' Club. Over 100 attended to honor the swimmers for their outstanding achievement as CNSA enters its 30th year of competitive swimming in Coronado. All swimmers received participation awards. In addition, special recognition awards and age-group high-point awards were bestowed. High-point awards were as follows: 8 & Under: John Tiderman (male, 2nd grade. Village Elem.) Mariana Fernandez (female). 9 -10: Raul Ortiz (male), Stacy Zambrano (female, 4th grade, Village Elem.), 11-12: Roberto Ibarra (male), Elena Velasquez (female). 13 - 14: Genaro Fernandez (male), Christine Keays (female). 15 - 16: Tim Mak (male), Martha Aguilar-Ortiz (female). Open: Jesus Mena (male). Special Recognition Awards were as follows: Most Improved: Rhett Chase (novice, 2nd grade. Village Elem), Thomas Hopkins (junior, 4th grade, Village Elem), Amanda Richards

(junior elite, Bth grade, Sacred Heart), Tony Ramirez (senior). Overall Training: Katie Curtis (novice, 6th grade, CMS), Shelly

Gonzalez (junior, 4th grade, Village Elem.), Oscar Martinez (junior elite), Eric Lopez (senior). Awarded for the first time was the Jeannette R. Gibson Memorial Award for parents' outstanding personal contribution to CNSA and

dedication to the sport of swimming. Receiving the award this year are Sandy Gonzalez and Maria Teresa Fernandez. CNSA is a competitive swimming club emphasizing excellence. Highlights of the past season include: • CNSA placed fourth in team standings (out of 38 teams) at Junior Olympics.

• Tim Mak wins 3 events (200 back, 100 back, 100 fly) and sets a San Diego record (220 back) at the Western Zone Championships in Santa Clara. • Eric Ixjpez qualifies in two events (200 back, 400 IM) for Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, Minnesota. • Christine Keays is named San Diego-Imperial Swimming "Swimmer of the Month" for her outstanding performance at Junior Olympics.

• Jesus Mena is named Team Captain for the Western Zone Team • Seven CNSA swimmers qualify for Junior Olympics for the first time. CNSA currently trains at the Coronado Municipal pool Monday through Friday afternoons from 4 to 6:15 pm.
