The Cafe 1134 coffeehouse and gallery will hold a reception on Thursday, May 19, whereby the public will have the opportunity to meet artist Dave Newman. The reception is at 8:00 pm. At the time of the announcement, the Cafe's award winning coffee grower Don Dominguez of K & F Select Fine Coffees in Oregon also paid a visit. "We supply exclusively to Cafe 1134 and her sister cafes in San Diego county," said Dominguez. "I can deliver a great product but, it's up to the Cafes to prepare and present the coffee well. Rick (the cafe's owner) does a fantastic job on both accounts." K & F Select Fine Coffees won the coveted Portland Cup Award in April 1993. The contest is held every two years and sponsored by McCormick and Schmidt's restaurants. Just last March, Cafe 1134 walked off with the Union Tribune's Creme de la Creme Award for the best coffeehouse. "We constantly strive to expand our services," said co-owner Rick Chapman. "We've recently expanded our breakfast faire to include several continental egg dishes."

Another attractive feature of the cafe and gallery is the continuously rotating exhibitions of work by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists. The multi-media works of Dave Newman are currently on display. Newman combines photography, collage, silk screen, and painting to create his own unique mixture of pop and nostalgia inspired contemporary images. Drawing from the urban contrast of New York and Itos Angeles, Newman introduces a sense of place that is also sometirres inspired by his Southwest trips to Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Bom in 1956, Newman grew up in the shadow of Disneyland. Many of his earliest memories are of palm trees, small motels, and colorful blinking neon signs. "These images are often created with items I've discovered while scouring antique shops and flea markets," he said. "That's hall the fun of this art form." Dave Newman currently resides in Santa Margarita, CA with his wife Donna.
