BUSINESS NEWS AND FEATURES School Board Candidates Answer Questions

Dan Stacy Q. What are the three most important things that the school hoard needs to address? A. 1. The school board needs to make the district budget its number one priority. Making sure that our school district is financially solvent and fiscally sound. That all monies are accountable and that each dollar brought into our school district can be directly traced to how it is spent for our children. 2. In addition, the board needs to make sure that the community is aware of the monies that are available in the budget. Lines of communication between the board and the community must be reestablished, so that there is little room for misinformation and rumor. 3. The board needs to make itself not only accessible, but approachable. So that all parties having any dealings with the board, feel that they arc not only listened to, but also appreciated for their efforts. The Brown Act is not an excuse for disrespect or disregard. Q. What is your view of the proposed hotline; how should it work? A I do not feel that the "hotline" in it's current state is workable and may not even be advisable. Wanting a safe campus for our children is great. Wanting our children to be more responsible for that goal is great. However, experience has shown me that children learn best by example. I do not believe that the children in our community are going to take a stand - either individually or united - until their adult role models do the same. Forums where parents, teachers, administrators, counselors, police; whoever is involved in that child's life, need to take place. Q. What should be the school board's role in education? A The board’s role in education must be strong in three areas. (1) to make sure Uiat the district is financially solvent and fiscally sound. Coupled with this is the fact that our schools are not receiving the outside funding that we used to and new revenue sources must be sought out. In addition, the board must make sure that (2) all policies and procedures regarding the functioning of our schools and our students, are in place. That those policies/ procedures are fair to all concerned and administered to all involved evenly and consistently, and (3) that our administrators do their jobs with fervor and conviction. Q. What contribution can you best make to the school board? A My contributions will be: 1) Ten years experience working on behalf of various children and their families with all facets of the Coronado school(s) system (administration, teachers, counselors, coaches, etc.) 2) A thorough understanding of children and their families, (and the unique pressures faced by each in today's society), and how strong a factor school is In their lives. 3) A belief that the school board needs to be a body that listens to and responds to the members of this community, versus simply dictating to them.

Marlys Williams Q. What are the three most important things the school board needs to address? A. A. Curriculum - well articulated, technology integrated with high expectations for all students to promote thinking and reasoning in preparation for today's world. This must be supported by a staff development for teachers. B. Safe School Environment - This includes overcrowding issues such as we see at the middle school, some facilities issues and safety regarding the presence of drugs, alcohol, vandalism and violence on campus. C. Fiscal Responsibility - Understandable budget building and creative approaches to funding resources. Q. What is your view of the proposed hotline; how should it work? A. The proposed hotline has indeed become a "Hot" line. I appreciate the community awareness of the drug and alcohol problem that has resulted from the hotline discussion. I disapproved of the $5O reward. I am pleased with the consensus of the Task Force to drop the reward. I trust the process of the Task Force of students, school staff and community members to integrate the concept of student responsibility for a safe sch(x>l community with a procedure that insures respect and confidentiality. Q. What should be the school hoard's role in education ? A. The role of the school board is to represent the community in the hiring and the evaluation of the superintendent and the establishment of the school district policies. A board member has no individual power separate from the body of the Board. I will be accessible to all points of view and continue to be involved in community activities. Q. What contributions can you best make to the School Hoard? A. I offer experience with school budgets, curriculum, facility development along with drug and alcohol education from 6 years of service in the early 80's on another San Diego County School Board. I am committed to do all 1 can to contribute to an environment of mutual respect as the board deals with students, staffs, parents, and community groups.
