Red Cross Honors Capt. James Gordon Glaes

Elizabeth Dole, President of the American Red Cross, recently issued a Certificate of Appreciation to Captain J.G. “Gordy” Glaes “for sharing compassion, wisdom and extraordinary commitment with all of us at the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter.” At the same time a procla-

mation declaring Dec. tain James Gordon Glaes Day,” was issued by Mayor Tom Smisek and the City Council of the City of Coronado. The double honors were given in appreciation for Captain Glaes outstanding contributions in volunteerism.

“Gordy” Glaes has been active with the local Red Cross tor twenty-six and a-half years, having served as Chair, Secretary/ Treasurer, Transportation Coordinator and hospital liaison for both Coronado and Balboa Hospitals. He ‘manned’ the phones, arranged for the delivery of cakes to patients, paid the bills for the local building, and contributed his time, his money and personal possessions all in his usual self-effac-ing and unassuming way. As part of his Coronado Hospital activities, he became known as a “Blue Boy” (in contrast to the Pink Ladies) as he tirelessly vis-

ited and assisted the needs of patients. Captain Glaes has also served as Commodore at the Coronado Yacht Club. An extended illness keeps him at home but hasn’t managed to

interfere with his continued contributions. For more information on local chapters of the American Red Cross, contact 435-4285 or tax 435-4539.
