February Is A Good Month For The CYC Jr Sailing Program

February has been a very good month for one Coronado junior sailor, despite or perhaps, in spite, of the rainy weather and fickle winds. While El Nino tears up the coastline, Michael AndersonMitterling is thrashing the competition in junior sailing and creating a storm of his own. Purchasing his own Laser Radial in late January to launch a move into another junior division of older and more experienced sailors, Michael entered the “J.J. Isler Perpetual Series Luff-In” at Southwestern Yacht Club (SWYC) on Feb. 8. Taking 2nd place in his first ever Laser Radial regatta, Michael proved that he is

no novice racer; especially when he also took a 2nd place in the day’s prior “Connor Series LuffIn” regatta at SWYC in the Sabot “A” Fleet. After cleaning up in San Diego, Michael flew to St. Petersburg, Florida along with CYC Junior Conner Herron to compete in the Valentine’s Day Regatta Feb. 14 and 15, in yet another unfamiliar boat, The Optimist. Both boys prepared to sail in a fleet of more than 200 boats in St. Petersburg as part of an annual “friendship exchange” with San Diego Area Yacht Clubs (SDAYC) - which selects four of the area’s best junior sailors to compete in the Florida Optimist

regatta - and St. Petersburg Yacht Club which, in turn, sends their four best to compete in a SDAYC Sabot regatta. Other CYC junior news includes our Feb. 21 beach clean-up at Glorietta Bay Park as a part of the CYC “Adopt a Beach” program and the juniors’ continuing commitment to a clean bay. “Sabot Fun Day,” on tap for Sunday, Feb. 22, promises kids from all over San Diego a day of fun, food and friendship with a little sailing in between.
