Interesting to Settlers on School Land Sections.

The following Act was passed by Congress, and approved February L'Tlli. IH:t. It will he interesting to a large class in this State who have settled upon the sixteenth and thirty-sixth sections (School Lands), before survey :

LAWS Of TIIK. I'MTgn BTATKH. PI.HI.IC 20. AN ACT to authorize settlers upon sixteenth and thirty-sixth sections, w ho settled before the survey of the public lands, to pre-empt their settlements

Hi it enacted by the Senate and House of Hcp-re.-eiitat iv es of the Cnitcd States of America, in Congress assembled, That, where settlements, with a view to pre-emption, hay c been made before ths lot roj of the binds in the Held, which shall be found to have been nil Ofl sections sixteen and thirty-six. said sections shall he subject to the preemption claim of such settlers; and if they, or either of them, shall have been or shall be reserved or pledged for the use of schools or colleges in the State or Territory in which the lands lie, other lands, of like quality, are hereby appropriated in lieu of such us may be patented by pre-emptors ; and other binds are also hereby appropriated to compensate deficiencies for school purposes, where said sections sixteen and thirty-six are fractional In quantity, or where one or both are wanting by reason of the township being fractional, or from any natural cause whatever : Provided, That the lands by this section appropriated in iw coidam c with the principles of adjustment and the provisions of the Ait of Congress of May 20, 182il, entitled An Ai tto appropriate lands for the sapport of schools in certain townships not before provided for."
