LICENSE PLATES FOR AUTOS TO BE ISSUED MONDAY Old Permits Will Be Good Until February I—No Duplication of Numbers This Year.

Certificates of registration and license plates for automobiles for 1922 will be issued at the San Diego branch office of the division of motor vehicles, befginning at 9 o’clock on the morning of January 16. The old 1921 licenses will be good until February 1, but the work of giving out the new licenses will be started 16 days before the opening of the 1922 fiscal year for motor vehicles, in order to give everyone an opportunity to get a new license. There were 25,000 license plates issued at the local office in the Golden West hotel building last year, and the mangaer, Mrs. Blithe B. KelIcher, and her corps of assistants are expecting a grand rush from the opening day until even after the penalty will be due. The most important thing to have, when going after a license plate and certificate of registration, is a Certificate of registration that is legible; if it is not legible, apply now by mail to the Sacramento office for a duplicate, Mrs. Kelleher says. The next important thing is the fee charged—4o cents per horsepower. Ford owners will have to pay $8.80; Chevrolet owners, the same; Dodge owners, $9.60, and the other cars according to the horsepower. An announcement of interest to car owners is that ther& will be no duplication of numbers m the various lines of motor vehicles, as in the past. Commercial cars, motorcycles, state and county, municipal and public service machines will have the small nnumbers, and the automobiles the larger series. This is not expected to be a popular announcement, as Mrs. Kelleher says so many peresons pleaded for small numbers for their automobiles last year, and now there are to be no small ones. • There have been 20,000 ‘license plates received at the local office already and every effort is to be made to rush the work as much as possible, the prevent the necessity of standing In line so long. All operator’s licenses issued since February 1, 1920, will be good until revoked for some cause, and it will not be necessary to renew them. “Absolutely no registration will be issued until January 16,’’ Mrs. Kelleher says, and she requests that no application be made, as it will not only be useless but will also hold up the preliminary work while the explanation is being made.
