High School Notes

At our regular assembly meeting last Monday morning, Mr. Cutler was conspicuous by his absence—having left Sunday to attend the California State Convention of Principals, held at Yosemite. Although he has been gone all week, we are proud to be able to report that the mice have not played since they were under the watchful eyes of the masculine members of the faculty, who have had charge of his classes The Shakespearean contest, held Friday, May 11th, was well supported by the public. This contest for the purpose of choosing a boy and a girl from among the ten participants. The winners were George Lewis, as Othello, and Martha Farnum, as Lady Macbeth, who are to be the representatives of Coronado High School at the contest in Berkeley to be held during latter part of May. Saturday evening the Staff of the Annual entertained the - Freshman Class with a boat ride on the Glorietta. This ride was the prize received by the Freshmen for selling the great number of tickets for the play “Kindling.” Friday afternoon, May 11th, the baseball team played against National City, losing with a score of 10-3. This marks the close of our baseball season. Swimming is now the main topic of conversation. This year swimming has been included among the list of County League sports; a meet is to be held at Tent City early in June- The boys are working hard every afternoon in order to make the team. They hope to prove that there is enough interest in swimming to warrant its place among the League athletics. Although the girls, as yet, have not been included in this meet, they are trying to stimulate enough competition to enable them having a League meet of their own. Even if this should not materialize, a meet with Sweetwater has been definitely decided upon. * —rue acmvi -iiiiany cnosen their style of calling and announcement cards, expecting tp have them within two weeks. Last Monday, elections for next year’s Girls’ Club officers were held, those elected as follows: Martha Farnum, President; Ada Davies, VicePresident; Mona Norris, Secretary. According to custom, each officer is a representative of one of the classes, this necessitating the election of Treasurer to be held over until after the enrollment of next year’s entering Freshmen. Last Tuesday afternoon the members of the Commercial Department were given a very interesting typewriting demonstration by Mr- William F. Oswald, World's Champion Typist in 1919. Mr. Oswald gave them several pointers, also, concerning the operation of a typewriter which will be very useful to members of the typewriting class. Peggy McNeill.
