SAN FRANCISCO, December 18th. H. F. W. Johnson, arrested for killing Horace Smith, was brought up on writ of habeas corpus to-day. The writ was sued out by friends of the accused without his knowledge. At his own request, Johnson was remanded Into the custody of the Sheriff, and is now on his way to Virginia. A man named Conrad Dreath committed suicide this morning by shooting himself through the head at the Chicago Hotel. On the body was found a letter written from Manhattanville (N. Y.), by a lady to whom he was engaged to be married. She advised him to remain here to avoid the draft, as she supposed every ablebodied man in the country would be called for. Deceased was a native of Bavaria. In the case of Ross, the order perfecting his bonds was vacated to-day on his appearance in Court. His absence yesterday was unavoidable. John B. Scranton, well known throughout the State, was examined to-day for insanity, and ordered to the State Asylum; as was also Wm. Johnson Warren. D. Holden and Patrick Donohoe, convicted of burglary, and Randolph Snowden of larceny, were sentenced for one year to the State Prison. U. S. Marshal Pond is prosecuted for contempt of Court, in disobeying a mandate of the Fourth District Court, in the matter of ejectment of squatters from O'Connor's ranch, in Contra Costa. The Marshal was acting under a writ issued by Judge Field. The order of the District Court was subsequent. Arrived—Ship Humboldt, 81 days from New South Wales, to Macondray. The Chamber of Commerce was In session until a late hour this evening, but its proceedings were not made public. It is understood that a definite plan of action was adopted to save the Comanche. By a legislative Act, the City Government will have authority to undertake the work.
