I The annual meeting of the California Academy of Sciences was held last evening, President Geo. Davidson in the chair. *• The usual order of business was omitted in order that the yearly reports of the various . officers might be read. The first was that of the Board of Trustees, written by George E. Gray, President. It was a brief document detailing the general prosperity of the Academy, there being no debt, ind the prospects of realizing the benefits that were to accrue to the members from the settlement of the controversies with the Lick Trustees in a year or so were highly flattering. C. G. Yale, Recording Secretary, made a report showing that there were 816 members of the Aoademy. m ' The report of the Librarian was submitted, showing that 690 volumes had been added by gift and purchase daring the year. . : Elisha Brooks, Treasurer, reported cash receiDts for the .year, 19,885 24 ; expenditures, * 8,253 52 ; balance, $1,631 72. In the Crocker fund there was a cash balance of $1,042 20. From the report of W. G. W. Harford, Curator of the. Museum, it appears that during the year a great deal of work has been done in each department, not only by the regular heads of the department, but by earnest students in the special branches. In that of -fishes, more than 700 specimens had been classified, among them a new species that had been found in Arizona by J. G. Lemon. In Botany some very interesting work had been accomplished. Dr. Baehr read a special paper on the subject of entomology, B&owing- that he had classified 232 specimens, besides carrying on quite a correspondence with the societies concerning insects injurious to vegetation. The election of officera was next made and the following " were, declared elected : George* Davidson, President ; H. W. Harkness, H. A. Beahr, Vice-presidents ; S. B. Christy, Corresponding Secretary ; C. G. Yale, Recording Secretary ; Elisha Brooks, Treasurer ; C. Troyer, Librarian ; W. G. W. Harford, Curator. Trustees— G. E. "Gray, Thos. P. Madden, Charles Crocker, R. C. Harrison, Lewis Gerstle, J. M. McDonald. In consideration of their valuable services tha, Committee recommended that H. W. Harkness and C.-G. Yale be elected life members, which was carried. President Davidson read a carefully-prepared paper on the recent problems in astronomy that offered themselves -to the student in physical science, after which the meeting adjourned.
