LOS ANGELES NOTES.

A Budget or Interesting Hews from the Southern Metropolis.

Los Angeles, July 12th. — Peter Michel, a farmer, aged sixty-five years, a native of Switzerland, committed suicide by hanging himself on his farm near Ocean View, in this county. Michel was considered slightly deranged. He left an estate worth nearly 15,000. Samuel Sampson, a laborer, was found dead in Dodsworth'e packing establishment this morning. He was aged sixty-seven years, and was a native of Pennsylvania. The Coroner's jury brought in a verdict of death from heart disease. Armory Hall has been opened aa headquarters for the G. A. B. visitors to the Encampment at San Francisco who may stop over in Los Angeles. The City Council to-day opened bids for one hundred $500 General Improvement bonds. The bids ranged from par to seven per cent, premium. The City Council to-day decided to appoint three additional ecale-bne inspectors. Last month there were thirty-six deaths and thirty-one births in this city. Dr. Swatelle of the United States Navy is here looking for a site for a marine hospital. The City Council will donate a six-acre tract foe the purpose. This morning it rained in the moataina near this city.

A Jost Kevenge.

Union, Or., July 12th.— A quarrel has been going on for some time between two young men named Lagore and a man named Bennett, near Bummerville. Saturday the quarrel came to a fatal termination by one of the Lagore boys being shot by Bennett, who was in concealment on the Bide of the road. Tbe main cause that led to the shooting was that Bennett was beaten cruelly some weeks eince by the Lagore boys while in a feeble condition, the result of a long spell of sickness. His persecutors went so far as to knock his teeth out with rock and bruise and batter his face in aa inhuman manner.

Hospital tor Chronic Insane.

San Jose, July 12th.— Only three bids were received this morning for building a hospital for the chronic insane, as follows : A. I. Mcllvain, #165,800 ;E. A. Van Dalsen, f 155,900 ; J. D. Stewart, 1182,884. Eleven other bidders, mostly from San Francisco, refused to bid and asked extension of time to rectify alleged impossible and ambiguous specifications, the most important being that the time for completing the brickwork is too short. The reqaest was denied, as they had had opportunity before to make objection, bids were taken under consideration till 2 p. ar.

A Father Poisons Himself and Boa.

Pobtland, Or., July 12th.— The discovery of the dead bodies of Otto Dupont and that of his son, Willie Dupont, aged eight years, was made at 1 o'clock this afternoon at their residence, 1100 C street. Neither bore marks of violence. A letter was found signed by Dupont, stating that he had poisoned his boy and then himself. Dupont was an Alsatian, a barber by trade, and aged thirtyfive. He gave domestic trouble as the cause. His wife left him some years ago in San Francisco, and is now in an Insane Asylum in New Westminster. •

Judge Ross Resigns Again.

Sacramento, July 12th.— Associate Justice of the Supreme Court E. M. Ross has tendered his resignation to Governor Stoneman, to take effect the first day of October next. The Governor don't know whether he will appoint a successor for the one month intervening before the election or not. He cays Ross is the great American resiguer, this being the third resignation he has sent in. The Governor says he ought to resign at once or else hold the office until November Ist.

Very Bad Tidings.

Marysville, July 12. — As the threshing season advances, the fact is developed that the norther of June 10th and 12th did much greater damage by shelling out grain than was estimated by the farmers. This, together with other- drawbacks of the season, has reduced the yield to less than 50 per cent, of an average crop in Sutter and Yuba counties. This circumstance, in connection with the low price of grain, has a depressing effect on the farming community and business interests generally.

Another Good Jinn Gone.

Virginia, Nev., July 12th.— Geo. M. Nichter, a native of Bavaria, sixty-four years of age, bookkeeper of the California Brewery, in this city, died suddenly of heart disease this morning. He served in the Indian war of 1860, nnder Captain Storey, and was a highly respected resident of the Comstock and one of its earliest settlers. - Deceased leaves a widow here, a daughter in Oakland, Cal., and several sons and daughters residing near St. Louis, Mo.

Notes from Jloriuondom.

Balt Lake, July 12th.— A. E. Hyde's examination for unlawful cohabitation was finished to-day. Ha.was held in $2,000 bail, and the witnesses in $200 each.

Sam Tate was killed yesterday by a sunstroke at Lamington, the first stroke in the history of the Territory. D. H. Stewart, one of a deaf and dumb party en route to the coast, was overcome by heat is this city last night, and died this morning from its effects.

A Costly Find.

Redwood City, July lZth.— A man giving the name of | Frank French was arrested here to-day while in the act of trading a horse and bugzy for some hay. The Sheriff learned by telegraph that the team belonged to S. G. Sresovich, a paint dealer of 413 Washington street, San Francisco. French eaya he found it on the streets in San Francisco. BE3H

School Has Commenced.

Petaloia, July . 12th.— The Public Schools opened to-dayV with ' Professor A. G. Burnett as Principal of tbe High School, and Prof eesor Cromwell Principal of the Grammar School. The sama teachers are continued. Thermometer ranging from 90 to 100 in the shade.
