A LIFETIME OF ILLNESS Frank Scully, Author of Cheer Books for Invalids, Dies at 72

Frank Joseph Xavier Scully, 72, one of the most widely known authors and script writers to make Palm Springs his home, died yesterday after almost a lifetime of illness. A Rosary will be recited this evening at 7:30 in Wiefels and Son chapel. General Mass will be observed at 10 a m. Friday at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Nolan officiating. Burial will be at Desert Memorial Park. Scully was born April 28, 1892, at Steinway, L.1., N Y. He studied journalism at Columbia, graduating with the class of 1917, but in the meantime he had joined the reporting staff of the N.Y. Sun, and had become managing editor of The Spur. ed,” “Rogue’s Gallery,” “Behind The Flying Saucers,” and many other entertaining books. Scully spent a good portion of his Life in various health resorts. These sojourns provided the basic experiences of which he often wrote. “In Bright Armor” and “The Gay Knight” were others. Not only does Welwood Murray Memorial Library list a number of his books, but they also have three biographies which tell many interesting facts about this prolific writer and champion of philanthropic movements. Director of publicity for MGM in France in the late 20’s, he met and married Alice Mellby Pihl in Paris in 1930, at that time being president of Lach-man-Putnam Productions. A call

from Fox brought the couple to Hollywood in 1934, when Scully became a full time script writer. Some of his civic and philanthropic activities are reflected in a list of offices he has held: Secretary. California State Department of Institutions; President of the Muscular Dystrophy Fund; Director of the Walk Again Foundation; president, Hollywood Humane Society; Democratic Party chairman. and Third Order of St, Francis. Scully is survived by his wife, Alice of 2100 Calle Felicia; ore son, Thomas J. Scully of Panorama City: daughters Nonny and Moreen; Patricia Wilson of San Dego, and Frances Frishberg nf Portland, Ore.
