Nate Colbert Sets Record

Bv NEIL HERSHBERG L'FI Sports Writer Nate Colbert set a major league record when he drove in 13 runs on five homers, including a grand slammer, and a single in leading the San Diego Padres to a doubleheader sweep over the Atlanta Braves, 9-0 and 11-7. The old major league record of 11 RBIs in a doubleheader was held jointly by Earl Averill, Jim Tabor and Boog Powell. Colbert’s five home runs tied him with Stan Musial for most home runs in a doubleheader. Colbert’s feat, which gave him the major league lead in home runs with 30 and in RBIs with 82, saw him hit two homers in the first game and three in the second, driving in five runs in the opener and eight in the nightcap. The San Diego first baseman, who has hit 16 homers in the past 32 days, remarked earlier in the season that Atlanta had the sort of ballpark he would enjoy playing in on a daily basis. “1 would like to play one season in New York, Philadelphia or Atlanta and see how many home runs 1 could hit. Its a lot easier in those parks than it is in ours (San Diego Stadium),” Colbert said.
