Remy: Honored And Proud To Be The Angels’ Captain

ANAHEIM (AP) - The California Angels have their second team captain in the 17-year history of the franchise. Second baseman Jerry Remy, who has been a major leaguer for only 2Vi years, was appointed as the Angels' captain by Manager Norm Sherry Tuesday night “I’m honored and proud,” said the 24-year-old Remy. “I’m surprised but I feel that it's a good idea. A captain gives the players someone to talk to without taking everything to the manager. “Actually, there shouldn’t be that much to do with this team,” added Remy. "Everyone hustles. Everyone gives 100 per cent. It'll be my

job to set an example, to play hard, as I always have tried to do, and to get on a player if I feel he’s letting down. "1 don’t see any problem in going to an older, more experienced player in that regard since anyone not doing the job knows it in his heart, knows that he deserves a chewing out.” Remy’s teammates voted him the Owner’s Trophy as the club's most valuable player last year. The only other captain in the history of the Angels was Frank Robinson, who was appointed by Dick Williams in 1974. Robinson held the job for about a month before being traded to Cleveland.
