At The Movies 'Some Kind of Hero’

SOME KIND OF HERO proves once again in case it still needed proving that Richard Pryor can shine in the flimsiest of human-inter-est comedies. This one is based on James Kirkwood's book about a soldier's capture in Vietnam and his return home six years later to a faithless wife and an Army that is not overly receptive to his explanation of why he signed a confession of wrongdoing. It may not sound like much of a howler, but with Pryor’s talent and Michael Pressman’s able directing, there are plenty of laughs and some touching moments as well most of them in the first half. Ray Sharkey as Pryor’s ill-fated cellmate, and Margot Kidder as the Beverly Hills hooker who befriends the luckless veteran, also turn in appealing supporting performances. But the film goes downhill when it starts focusing on Pryor’s attempts to get money,
