SHALL THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST BE KILLED?

Endeavoring to remove the last remaining spirit of the west, the Anti-Rodeo Cruelty Association has filed an initiative measure with the secretary of state at Sacramento and is now campaigning to securc 91,529 signatures needed to place the measure on the ballot next November. ....The proposed law would prohibit "bulldoggingr bull riding, wild animal riding, two men roping, high lifing and poin strapping.." It would also prohibit use of spurs to make an animal buck or terrifying or exciting it for sport or amusement purposes. "Chewing an ear" when a cowboy is wrapped around a refractory steer would also be forbidden.

Some months ago the association changed its name from the "Anti-Rodeo" to "Anti-Rodeo Cruelty" association. Evidently it did not change its objective. If it should live up to its name, the association will have no quarrel with the Livermore Rodeo. Cruelty, to animals at least, has been en-4 tirely eliminated in the local show.

Quoting from the rules and regulations which are 'rigidly enforced at the Livermore Rodeo, we find 'the following:

Bronc Riding—"AH spur rowels to be taped and-: ^^ano steel showing." Bulldogging—"Contestant to catch steer and place rubber band on nose. If steer is knocked down, bulldogger is disqualified."

Two men steer, roping—-"Steer to be roped but not thrown. Steer must not be handled roughly. One man steer roping—"If steer is thrown anytime, contestant to be disqualified."

In every case, rough treatment' of the animal re-, suits immediately in either penalty or disqualification of the contestant. This has effectually removed the "cruelty" from the Livermore Rodeo to the point where the local show receives nothing but commendation from representatives of the Society, for the Prevention of-Cruelty to Animals, who arealways in, attendance at the Rodeo.

To repeat, if the association is endeavoring to ban "rodeo cruelty," it will find the management of the Livermore Rodeo wholeheartedly in sympathy with the movement. Most of the stock used comes front Livermore ranches and the owners are always in: the arena among the contestants. They certainly: do not countenance "cruelty" to the animals.

On the other hand, if the association is "Anti^ Rodeo," and its aim certainly seems to be in that direction, it will find every true westerner, every lover of the old cowboy sports, every rancher, cat" tleman and rider, and every Rodeo "fan" in the state in line against its measure.

The stockmen realize the strength of the organized opposition to rodeos.. Managers of rodeos: throughout the state will meet at Sacramento next: week end to discuss methods of keeping alive the spirit of the west. /They will find unlimited support among those who feel that the rodeo typifies earlyCalifornia. Let us hope that they can decide upona campaign which wilt forever stamp out this attempt to destroy California's last link with the past.:

3 THE FORCE OF INTELLECT

More and more brain power is own as opposed to brute strength.

known times when physical force dominated both' man and beast. Those days are gone. Now everything is ruled by thoughts in the minds of men. Vf And this Age of Intellect is having unexpected results. The old-time prize-fighter, and many other old-time exponents of various sports, had only strength. The prize-fighter with the largest biceps, longest reach steadiest legs and the best punch was, the idol of the populace. Now a prize-fighter is ex- j. pected to have some business'sagacity, and a good Aw. scientific knowledge of the fis'tic game. In addition, we have come to expect our prize-fighters to know a little, even more than a little, about things which belong in the realm of art.

Witness the coming to this country of- Umberto Torriani, Italy champion. Not half as much fuss is being made about Umberto's muscles as is being made about his classical education. Umberto is i- proud of being a deep student of Shakespeare, Homer and the entire range of classic literature.

Our own Gene Tunney—whom Umberto would $ like to meet both in the ring and as an opponent in an intelligence test—knows not only the art of the ,_J?:

In &U sport, and in many other lines of activity. Part'cipants today have more in their than a cynic would expect. This brain-power dominates! 6

AUGUST HOMART CAMPAIGN OPENS

(Continued from Face Canyon road. Assemblyman W. P. Jost of Hayward serving his second term in the legislature, announced Saturday that he would be a candidate for reelection. Jost had been mentioned I as ft possibl^, candidate for state .senator but with the' announcement of Senator E. H. ChristiaA, also of

Hayward, that he will be a candl I date for re-election, Jost has decid ed ,to seek return to his present po« sition. Jost was chairman of the assembly committee on agriculture at the last session of the legislature and has a strong following among the farmers.

Rumors that Senator E. H. Chris-* tiaq would retire fro mpolitics were set at rest when Christian announced himself as a candidate for re-^1-{ection.

Excepting only the formality of voting, superior court judges'are already elected. Judge E. S. RobinsOn,

Leon Gray and Homer Spence will be unapposed, as time for filing declaration of candidacy has expired without any other candidates announcing themseleves.

Under the sponsor system of nominating candidates, which goes into effect on a statewide ,scale in California for the first time, sponsors' required varying according to the office sought. It is even possible for a group of sponsors to launch a candidacy without the prospective candidate being aware of his boom, although he is required to file a declaration of acceptance, of the candidacy

A candidate for United States senator must have from 65 to 100 sponsors' and the filing fee is 2 percent of one year'9 salary, or $200.

A candidate for congressman must have from 40 to 60 sponsors and the filing fee is- $100. Candidates for senator or assemblymen muit have from 20 to 30 sponsors. The filing fee is $20.

Candidates for supervisor and superior judge must have from 20 to 30 sponsors and the filing fee for each office is $10. a

New Fordor Sedan To Be Sfown Saturday

The neftr Ford Sedan will be shown in Oakland for the first time Saturday June 2, in the Jackson Furniture Company's store, 13the and Clay streets,: according to a statement just given out by Lear Kimler, Motor Co., dealers here for the Ford (Motor Company.

Probably more interest has been centered around the appearance of this new Sedan which rounds out and completes the new Ford passenger bar line than any other automobile for some time past, as thousands oyer the country have already placed orders for the Fordor without ever having seen the actual car itself.

In fact, according to the Ford Motor Company here, so ,many favored the Sedan type when the new car was first announced the forepart of the year, that it was decided to make this car the really de-luxe model of the new line..

That this lias been accomplished will be admittied by everyone 'when they seen this automobile with its streamline 'body and^beautiful exterior color combinations. Many refinements have been built into the interior of this bpdy which seldom are found iri cars in the lower priced field such as rich upholstery, harmonizing'- to the fullest degree with the exterior cojor. arrangement arm rests—dome' lights— and many others, all of which give both the exterior and interior of that of a regular little custom built car, one that will command attention with its fleetness, speed and style. -o^———

With a flag-raising ceremony Sunday morning to be one of the principal events of the day, Livermore legionairres will hold their annual outing at the Pines caimp in the Livermcjre mountains next Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3rd. The flag is being presented to the club by the ex-service meii.
