JUDGE MELVIN DROWNS SELF JIT HOSPITAL HOLDS HEAD IN HALF FILLED TUB OF WATER UNTIL DEAD —WAS PROMINENT LODGE MAN

(United Frees Dispatch) OAKLAND, April 24.—Justice Henry Melvin of the California state supreme court committed suicide In the Merritt hospital today by drowning himself In a bathtub, according to Dr. Porter, the hospital physician, and a personal friend of Melvin. Dr. Porter said that Melvin has been suffering from hallucinations and has been constantly watched for fear he would attempt suicide. Today, eluding his attendants, he locked himself in a bath room and thrust his head in a half filled tub of water. He was dead before the door could be broken down. Melvin was one of the most prominent Jurists of the California bar. He was a former president of the Bohemian club and former grand exalted ruler of the Elks. OAKLAND. April 24.—Justice Henry A. Melvin of the state supreme court died today at the Merritt hospital following a lingering illness. He was long a prominent figure In the California courts.
