FINAL TRIBUTE IS PAID WASTE Successor to Chief Justice Is Chosen

OAKLAND, June 8. Friends are associates of the late chief justice of the California supreme court, William H. Waste, paid last tribute today as he lay in state in magisterial robes in the chapel in an Oakland mortuary. Justice Waste died Thursday at the age' of 71 years after a year s illness. At Ukiah Governor Culbert Olson indicated today he would make formal announcement soon after his return to Sacramento of his selection of Phil S. Gibson, Los Angeles, as chief justice of the California state supreme court to succeed the late William H. Waste. Gibson, former Los Angeles law professor, is an associate justice of the state's highest court.
