HE DAILY COURIER.

1AX BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.

JUDGB ULLIVAN'S CANDIDACY.

The address of the business men of alifornia in support of the noble and tcorruptible Judge Sullivan should be tad by every voter : The Business Men's Association of

an Francisco presents, for the earnest

Numeration of the voters of California, le following: An honest and capable Judiciary is the aramount necessity of our State.

A personal purity and integrity that ft their possessor above any other inuence than conscience, justice and ight ; a personal and moral courage that all prevent him faltering before aggre-.-ate corporate power, the threats of the

realthy, or the senseless clamor of the

nany; a thorough familiarity witn tne cienue and urinciules of jurisprudence,

bat he mav know and decla"' the law;

uid a clearness of thought it' d intellect

hat discerns that which ' j merely spe

nous and sophistical froiu that which is wund reason, are the essential qualities

irhich atone should commend an aspirant jo the Supreme Bench to the suffrages of

us fellow-citizens.

All tliene Qualities are possessed in

ore-vminent decree dv tne nonorame

Jeremiah F. Sullivan, the. Democratic

nominee for Associate Justice of the Su

Dreme Court, and they should secure him

the votes of all upright and intelligent

citizens irrespecsive of politics, which,

indeed should never be a prominent con

side rat ion in the exercise of the citizens

choice 01 judicial officers.

Although born in tne state ot connec

ticut. utmost all of Judge c-ullivan's life

has been spent in our own State. En

tering public life at a comparatively early aye as a member of the City and

County Board of Education, and having subsequently occupied the bench of the Superior Court in San Francisco for about ten years, his career has been more widely visible to and observed by his fellow citizens than could well be the case with one who had been occupied solely with his private business. And that career ha won for him from the great mass of the community the highest encomiums, and has proved his thorough fitness for the highest judicial position. True it is, he has made enemies, as every just and fearless Judge must. Corruptlv acquired wealth before whose

powers he would not dow ; insolent corporations which deem the people had

no rights which they are bound to respect ; bigots who would deny liberty of religious faith to others ; criminals who fancy that wealth and powerful connections raice them superior to the laws, with all the armies of todadies and purchased sarvitors who follow in the train of these various classes, opposed him virulently two years ago, when a candidate for a similar position. They fought him with devious and despicable devices which those of that ilk wield. Overconfidence in his election by the more respectable classes of the community enabled those devices to succeed and he was defeated. Let it not be so this year. The same evil powers are again opposing his election. See to it that his name for the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court is on your ballot. Thomas Keane, (of Keane Bros.) Pres. Louis Kast, Secretary.
