TALK OF THC TOWN. ; That the Street Superintendent is doing excellent work on the street! and plenty of it. That this fictitious agitation will soon die of inanition, and be contemptuously kicked into its grave by the common . aense of San Bernardino. . It will be boned deeply, too. That the shutting of Court street off from travel between D and , was a most commendable proceeding. The pity is that was not done sooner ; done before the new sidewalk was so badly injured. That the new Southern hotel is one of the handsomest buildings in Southern California, and that the cuisino, the accommodations and the attendance inside are quite as attractive as the beautiful appearance of the imposing exterior, or at least so say the patrons of the house, while personal observation confirms their eulogistic encomiums. That according to street reports, the gw company has bought the electric lights. This will of course give it a monopoly of liiflitins. the city, but as the

Suite Constitution gives the City Trustees the power of regulating the price of lights, no danger of extortion need be

apprehended. There are some good

points in tins new constitution ot ours.

a father and mother, many a pang of anguish, it was the thing of all others to do and the Trustees upon request of the people did it just at the propitious moment. No fear of epidemics hence-

lortu in ban Bernardino. That Thanksgiving day in San Bernardino was observed with all the eclat of

tradition. The only objectors were the

poor turkeys mat bled in thousands, it

was a quiet, an orueriy ana a Borr holiday. But, then, San Bernardino is a

quiet, an orderly and a sober town, in tne main, as much so as a town can be, while beer is brewed or whisky made, or grapes grown, as much so as a town can be until the knowledge of the prin

ciple and the manufacture are lost to the

world ; a loss which the world will never

know until man disappears from its

otu miracle is effected.

queror had marked him for his own. Ah I well, whom the Gods love die early was a trite and we have often thought a truthful saying of the ancients, though this seems but sorrowful consolation to those bereaved of their children. Submission to the will of the All-Wise, the All-Powerful and we, as we have the utmost faith, the All-Merciful is the first duty of us finite creatures, and should be our consolation, too. That already several thounond people have arrived in Southern California from the East since the election. The most of them went to Los Angeles and San Diego, but quite a sprinkling of them have stayed at Sau Bernardino. Los Angeles and .Sun Dieo reach out for them and by organized permanent effort get them. We o( an Bernardino do no:liin;i to attract them. In tho exci'rdioi train, which reached hero tho other ni,'!it Tuesday tho people were eaer in their inquiries concerning the various Southern sections. In the regular passenger train, which arrived the same day, there were several Jiarties for rian Bernardino. They were oquacious in their inquiries; wanted to know the names of our hotels, the rates which they charged and the style of their accommodations; wanted to know what kind of tables they spread ami if on chillv evenings firps were furni.-lied in the rooms; were curious m to the industries, the prospects and the general status of the city; and wanted to know h!I about the comitry surrounding Sun Bernardino. Los Angeles and sn Diego, they know all about, or think they do, though from the tenor of their talk,' their information was certainly deeply tinged with roseate colors. But of San Bernardino, they were profoundly ignorant. Of our re sources, they knew little or nothing. Many seemed to think this city was merely a wayside station. Now, here is work for the Board of Trade, providing, indeed, San Bernardino gives it the support that it is in duty and in self-interest bound to givo it. But, we have expostulated and suggested, advised and recommended so much on this subject that wo are despondent. San Bernardino has greater inducements for the homeseekor, stronger attractions for the tourist today than any other section in the South, and yet knowing this, our easy going people make little organized, small cooperative effort to brng them here, while Riverside, our neighbor, is organised as a unit to attract them. It is all too bad, all too sad, all too discouraging. Notice. Having discontinued the Const nsencies for tho Abbott Buggy Co. and Edwards & Son, we will close out what we have on hand at ACTUAL COST; consisting of Surries, Buggies and I'linetons. Remembor, we have but a limited number. If you want unything of the kind, now is the time. oct 30tf E. Olkntrom Grant & Co. llargtilnsl llargalnatl If you want extraordinary bargains in dry goods, boots and shoes, hats and ca tm and furnishing goods don't delay in calling on M. Byrne, the pioneer grocer. Wishing to dispose of the abovo lino he will sell them 10 per cent less than any other house in Baa Bernardino.
