White Sox Nip New York Nine In Uphill Baffle Vernon's Hit Gives Washington, Shea Nod Over St. Louis CHICAGO OP Ferris Fain homered with two aboard and Minnie Minoso scored from third base on what should have been a double play ball to give the Chicago White Sox an uphill 8 to 7 win over the New York Yankees before 11,907 chilled fans in Comiskey Park Saturday. The Yankees got off to a 3-run lead on a 4-run outburst in the second and coasted along, adding two in the sixth, until the Sox broke loose in the last two innings. The big blow was Fain's first homer, a prodigious blast far back in the right field stands. Southpaw Eddie Lopat started, in quest of his third straight win, and coasted along until the seventh when Rocky Krsnich hit his first homer.

The Browns were leading 4-3 in the eighth when Vernon delivered his round-tripper with Jim Busby, on basa with his second hit, abroad. One swing of Bob Elliott's big bat evened things up in the Browns' half of the fourth. His third home run into the stands in right center scored Bobby Young and Vic Wertz ahead of him. OUT AT PLATE Bill Glynn of the Cleveland Indians is tagged out at home Saturday by Catcher Sam White in the second inning with the Boston Red Sox at Municipal Stadium. Glynn, who had singled and moved to third on Harry Simpson's single, tried to score on Jim Hegan's fly to Jim Piersall, who threw to White. Ray Boone, back to camera, watches the play. Boston won, 5-1. (AP Wirephoto)
Brown Out-Hurls Bob Feller, 5-1 CLEVELAND (UP) Hector
(Skinny) Erown gave up seven hits
as he out-pitched Bob Feller Satur
day and netted the Boston Red Sox a 5-1 win over Cleveland. Dick Gernert scored Boston's first run in the fifth and drove in two more in the eighth with his third hit to send Feller down to his second defeat. Feller, who pitched eight innings, might have fared better except for some bad breaks. Although he was rapped for a double by Billy Goodman, the first batter he faced, Feller then retired 11 straight men before Boston scored. After Gernert singled, Sammy White and Gene Stephens bunted safely to fill the bases. First Feller fell on the wet grass in attempting to field White's bunt and First Baseman Bill Glynn tumbled in handling Stephens' tap. Gernert scored when Tom Umphlett hit into a double play. After the Red Sox had added two runs in the ninth, Dale Mitchell hit his first homer in the Indians' last turn to spoil Brown's shutout.

MAJOR RECORD TIED
Bernier Hits 3 Triples PITTSBURGH (UP) Carlos Bernier, speedy Pirate outfielder, tied a modern major league record by hitting three straight triples as Pittsburgh handed Cincinnati its seventh consecutive defeat, 12-4. Bernier, whose speed carried him to the Pacific Coast League base-stealing championship, also sandwiched a single in five trips. The last time three straight triples were hit was in 1939. Knuckleballer Paul LaPalme went the distance for his first victory, scattering 13 hits to give the Pirates their fourth straight. He had powerful runs-batted-in aid from Danny O'Connell and Ralph Kiner, each hitting tworun homers. It was Kiner's third circuit smash and No. 2 for O'Connell.
