ST. LOUIS (UP) The surging Milwaukee Braves soared to their sixth straight victory, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1, behind the 6-hit pitching of Warren Spahn Thursday.

The win was the Braves' 17thJ

in their last 19 starts and was particularly satisfying for Charlie Grimm and his warpath men as both leading New York and second-place Brooklyn were idle. They trail the Dodgers only three games But it was a tough defeat for

Clubface Open, Hit Down Across Line

In Trap Shot

In an explosion shot start the

club down from the top the same as on all other shots. The hips start turning first to bring you down into a hitting position as in 53A. Delay the hand , action then

with the club on the outside hit

down across the line, making sure

that the clubface is open. Make a

conscious effort to hit down. The club bites into the sand approximately one inch behind the ball

and goes on through to the fin

ish with the clubface still open (u-

lus. B). Actually I cut across the line of flight on this shot with the

clubface open, making the club

scoot through the sand so that it

doesn't stick.

The follow through is highly im

portant. Crossing over the hands

or closing the face of the club dur

ing this shot will cause you to

shank. Obviously, this shot re

quires a firm grip. But in spite of

that, don't tighten up. On long bunker shots the stance and address are the same as on short

bunker shots but the club selected will depend on the length of the

shot required. .

A good rule to remember is to

always take one more club than

you would for the same distance

on the fairway. Hitting the sand

will deaden the shot just about one

club, sometimes two.. What the dif

ference will be depends on wheth

er the sand is heavy or light.

Your problem on long bunker

shots is not only to get out of the bunker, but also to get as much

distance as possible.

POTTER PITCHES

COLT MO-HITTER FOR M'DERMOTT'S

Jim Potter closed out his Colt League career in a blaze of curves and fast balls Friday when he sent Barr's Solons to a no-hit, no-run

defeat, McDermott's Reds winning,

1-0.

First batter up in the seventh,

James Parese hit a fly ball to

right that was misjudged and

rilled a two-base hit. This was

later changed to an error when it

was determined that the fielder actually had the ball temporarily.!

Only score came in the fifth

when Potter drew a walk, took second when a pickoff backfired,

took third on a wild pitch and tal

lied on an error.

It was a tough game for Jim

Turner to lose. He struck out 13 to

Potter's 12 and only allowed two

hits.

Harrison Sporting Goods failed

to field a complete team forcing

forfeiture of its Junior League contest to the Lions. Barr's Solons 000 000 0 2 McDermott's Reds 000 010 x I S 2 Jim Turner Hares; Jim Potter tt Favela. . BOSTON (UP) Deputy Sheriff

grab the featherweight title By next St. Patrick's Day, took the

first step in that direction Thursday night by knocking out inept

Jimmy Ithia of New York in 1:47 of the fourth round of a scheduled 10-rounder at Boston Arena.
