FALCONS CAPTURE JR. Hl-Y CROWN The Falcons won the A Division championship of the1 San Bernardino Junior Hi-Y League by downing the Bears, 35-23, in a playoff game. The teams had ended in a tie. The Falcons built up a 17-13 halftime lead, then turned back a second-half rally by the Bears which tied the score at 19-19. Jerry Stewart scored 14 points and Ralph Lindsey 13 to lead the Falcons. Sam Chappie had 10, Leroy Webb 9 for the Bears.

La Salle's Goa 'Player of Year In UP Hoop Poll NEW YORK (UP) Tall, terrific Tom Gola, La Salle's 3time All-America whom many coaches believe is the greatest college basketball player in history, was voted "player of the year" in a nationwide United Press poll of sports .writers. The 6-7 Explorer star, who can do all basketball things to perfection, received 1G9 first-place votes out of 276 cast. Bill Russell, 6-10 junior center of San Francisco, polled 36 votes. School Basketball Tournament gets under way Saturday, with competition divided into two divisions for the first time. The grammar schools of the district have divided y their cage teams into heavyweights and light

weights, on the basis of exponents

Baseballers Excused Bill Hilber, Little League district representative, reminds parents and boys 9 to 13 planning to try out for the baseball teams that they are automatically excused both Saturdays if they play in the basketball tourney. of age, weight and height. This division has been in effect during the Saturday program conducted by City Recreation. All heavyweight games will be played at Sturges on Saturday, while the lightweights will play at Valley College. The March 5 games will include the first two rounds, while the semifinals and finals will be played Saturday, March 12. Sixteen teams will com

pete in both divisions with some schools entering teams in both tournaments.

The Kiwanis Club will present

individual awards to the winning teams in each division as well as team trophies to the wnners and second teams. The administration

burgh Pirates in Ft. Myers, Fla., to see if he might fit their requirements. Bernier was suspended last August when he slapped Umpire Chris Valenti in a dispute over balls and strikes called on him. Pay Hike From While Soxs TAMPA, Fla. (UP) Outfielder Minnie Minoso of the ' Chicago White Sox, who had sought a $20,000 raise, settled Thursday for a $7,000 hike which will give him a $35,000 salary for 1955. He came to terms after a long huddle with General Manager Frank Lane, then immediately went to work. The White Sox also reported that infielder Cass Michaels, who collapsed in a workout Wednesday, would remain in a hospital for another day and would be under tests by Dr. Mason Trupp, a neurosurgeon.
