Baker's Homer Aids Cub Split With Brooklyn

CHICAGO (UP) Gene Baker poled his 11th home run to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over Brooklyn Tuesday in the second eight-inning game of a doubleheader. The Dodgers erupted in a ninth-inning rally to win the opener, 6-4. Baker s clout sailed over the leftfield wall in the seventh and came off Don Drysdale, who suffered his fourth loss. Don Newcombe won the opener, getting his 21st victory. Ken Ihman came on after Drvsdale walked Ernie Banks and promptly yielded a single to Walt Moryn and a walk to Monte Irvin. Ed Roebuck, making his second relief appearance of the day, then came in for the Dodgers. Tigers Capture Protested Win BOSTON (UP) Al Kaline drove in three runs with a triple and his 24th homer and Frank Lary hurled a 5-hitter to give Detroit a 6-3 win over the Red Sox Tuesday. The game was play ed under protest by Boston Manager Mike Higgins because of an unusual play in the sixth. Higgins lodged the protest after catcher Sammy White was tossed out by Umpire Frank Umont. Evanston Reiains Coli Loop Title Over Austin Nine CHICAGO (UP) Pitcher Jim Woods of Evanston hurled a 3-hitter and slammed a home run to lead his team to a successful defense of its Colt League title with a 5-1 victory over Austin, Tex., at Comiskey Park. The victory was Kvanston's fourth straight in the second annual Colt World Series. The loss was the second in six starts for Austin in tourney play. One of Evanston's victims was Riverside, Pacific Coast champ. The 16year-old Woods was awarded the most valuable pitcher trophy after pitchjng his third victory. His home run was a powerful smash that landed in the leftfield stands.
