GRAVE CLOSES ON NOTED JESUIT

Funeral of the Rev.

Joseph Caredda at Santa Clara.

SAN JOSE, May 16.— The funeral of the Rev. Father Joseph Caredda, S. J.,. for nearly half a century a member of the fatuity of Santa Clara College, was held at Santa Clara at 11 o'clock this morning. At the request of the students the remains of the aged Jesuit were transferred to the Stndents' Memorial Chapel yesterday afternoon. The Jesuit community at 5:30 o'clock this morning /met in the church, and, as. is the custom of the order, chanted the. office of the dead. At 6:30 o'clock, a mass was cajebrated by the Rev. R. E. ICenna, the president of th« college, for the repose of the soul of the deceased. The \ students attended in a body.

The funeral ' services were held at 11 o'clock. There was a large number preseent. The Santa Clara band, of which Father Caredda was the organizer and Ita Jeaoer for thirty-live years, . attended. Flogs en the college buildings and in the town were at halfmast. Prominent members of the alumni, of the college from all over the State were in attendance and many magnificent floral pieces were received from those who could not attend ' The Jesuit fathers and brothers of this city and county and the students of the school were present at the funeral. Among the clergy were Father McQuade of San Frenclsco, Father Bernard McKinnon of Palo Alto, Father Foley of Alameda, Father Maguire of flan Jcec and others. Tfce alumni was represented by Supreme Court Justice William G. Lorigan. Henry •Kaufman, John O'Gara. Walker de Martini and Joseph Kennedy. Brothers Edmond and Bernard of St. Mary's College, Oakland, were also" In attendance.

Fether Caredda had an unusually large acquaintance among the alumni of the school. He was S4 years of age. Since 1854 he had been a member of the faculty of Santa Clara College and for thirtyfive years was vice president of ¦ ¦ tho school.
